When I first went gluten free ten years ago, it felt like there were no good gluten free options and I had no idea what to eat! And that was partly true ten years ago. But now there are so many awesome options!
Granted, there are lots of “whole foods” you can eat that are naturally gluten free, like potatoes, rice, beans, vegetables, meats, etc. But sometimes you just need to pull out something already made and ready to go. So I figured I would share a few of my favorite pre-made gluten free options. And as always, you can share yours in the comments!
Canyon Bakehouse Gluten Free Bread
First let’s talk about bread. Yummy GF bread is SO HARD to find. But fear not, they do exist! And I would put this brand at the top of my list.
This is legitimately my favorite gluten free bread. It is AMAZING. Soft and moist and yummy. I just keep it frozen and then toss it in the toaster oven.
And my daughter can enjoy their Mountain White Bread as well, even though she’s allergic to dairy, nuts, sesame and soy!
Against the Grain Gourmet Free Original Rolls
These are DECADENT. Sadly I can’t eat them currently since I’m breastfeeding and my daughter is allergic to dairy. But before my daughter came along, these were my absolute favorite. I’d use them by themselves, as hamburger buns or on an Egg McMuffin. They were perfect for any occasion and my mouth always wanted more.
Snyder’s GF Pretzels
I like to think I’m a bit of an expert on pretzels, since I have been OBSESSED with them for a couple decades. And these are by far the best GF ones around (in my opinion. And my gluten-eating friends love them too, which is saying something).
Live GFree Fusilli Pasta
Pasta is another one of those things that can taste like cardboard when it’s GF. Especially if it’s made with corn. (Pro Tip: Stay away from pasta with “corn” as an ingredient! Go for “brown rice” pasta instead.)
This is by far my favorite pasta, and I feel really healthy eating it too because it only has two ingredients: organic brown rice and organic quinoa. My 18-month-old daughter loves it too!
The only downside is I can only find it at Aldi; I think it’s an Aldi-specific brand. So if you don’t have an Aldi near you, check out my second favorite pasta: Tinkyada GF pasta. They have several types of pasta too!
Katz Cinnamon Donuts
If you need an extra special treat, this is a winner. I am OBSESSED with these GF donuts. Especially in the fall when everyone else (aka, my husband) is eating apple cider donuts, these are my go-to GF option. Stick them in the toaster and you’ll want to keep eating them forever!
The best part? They are free not only from gluten, but also from nuts, dairy, sesame and soy!! Total winner!
Nut Thin Crackers
I’m OBSESSED with the GF Pecan Nut Thins. They are SO GOOD. Granted, I can’t eat them right now since my daughter has a nut allergy and I’m still breastfeeding. However, they have been a huge fan favorite with me and my husband for years! And the GF Almond Nut Thins are really good too.
Let’s talk flour.
We typically use either the King Arthur or Bob’s Red Mill all-purpose flour. The key is to choose an “all-purpose” flour, or a “measure for measure” flour. If you get a flour that is just made from one ingredient (ie, almond flour, which can be used in lots of delicious recipes that specifically call for almond flour), it’ll change the texture in general baking. With all-purpose flour I can use almost any recipe and just substitute GF flour instead of regular flour, and it’ll usually taste good.
Let’s talk bagels.
To be honest, I haven’t found any GF bagels I love yet. There’s a store near my house that sells GF bagels (West End Bagels) and they’re decent, but a little too dense for my liking. Udi’s also offers pretty good frozen bagels (the best I’ve had so far), but they still don’t taste like a real bagel to me. Maybe one of these days I’ll find one. (Or if you know of a great GF bagel, please comment it below!)
Looking for gluten free granola bars?
Check out this blog post, with my two favorite brands of allergy-friendly grab-and-go granola bars!
I’ll keep updating this list as I find more out-of-this-world GF options.
And, as always, what are your favorite gluten free ready-made foods? Please share in the comments so I can try them too! 🙂
XOXO,
That Allergy Mama
