Learning About THE PHILIPPINES: An At-Home, Pre-K Summer Camp

Welcome to the FINAL WEEK of the “Moms Keep Their Sanity While Their Kids Learn About The World” summer camp!!😂🙌

If you missed Week 1, click here for our summer camp about Iceland!
OR click here for Week 2, our summer camp about Chile!
OR click here for Week 3, about Oman!

Now on to our last week, all about the Philippines!

When I took out the globe and asked my older daughter (Natalie) which countries she’d like to study this summer, she pointed to Iceland, Chile, Oman, and the Philippines.

My goals were to read one book a day about that week’s country, and find all those books in the library. (Aka, save money.)
Keep it simple so I don’t get overwhelmed.
And also, set up the week’s activity schedule like this:

Monday: Make a RECIPE from that country (that’s allergy-friendly!)
Tuesday: Do a SCIENCE EXPERIMENT based on that country
Wednesday: Learn a DANCE from that country
Thursday: Make a CRAFT based on that country
Friday: Go on an OUTING based on what we learned

So, without further ado, here’s what we came up with:

Kids Learn About The Philippines:
A 1-Week, At-Home, Pre-K Summer Camp

Monday:
Read: “Countries We Come From: The Philippines” by Holly Longworth and/or “Spotlight on the Philippines” by Bobbie Kalman
Recipe: Make Bihon Pancit OR Classic Filipino Pancit with Pork OR Filipino Chicken Adobo for dinner

Tuesday:
Read: “Sari-Sari Summers” by Lynnor Bontigao
Science Experiment: Follow the Flow Water System with this tutorial

Wednesday:
Read: “When Lola Visits” by Michelle Sterling
Dance: Learn a Filipino dance with this YouTube video – this is not a tutorial, but it’s simple enough that the girls and I can try to follow along with some of the basic steps

Thursday:
Read: “Christmas in the Philippines” by Cheryl L. Enderlein
Craft: Make a Parol Lantern with this tutorial – NOTE worth discussing, as stated by Local Passport Family: “Note that while this is very famous in the Philippines, it is a custom introduced by Spanish colonists.”

Friday:
Read: “Tuko and the Birds: A Tale from the Philippines” by Shirley Climo
Outing: Visit a small local island OR an aviary OR a museum with an exhibit about a terraced irrigation system (like The World Awareness Children’s Museum in Glens Falls, NY)

Thank you for joining us this summer!

If you do this summer camp, I want to hear how it went for you! And I’ll update this post with photos after we actually DO this week of summer camp ourselves! 😍
