Allergy-Friendly KIYA-themed Kids’ Birthday Party!

Is your child loving Disney’s new show Kiya & the Kimoja Heroes? Mine too! Here’s how we planned an awesome theme party, while making it safe for her severe food allergies!

#1: Baton decorating.

Kiya has a baton she uses with her superpowers, so as each guest arrived, they received one of these light-up batons from Amazon!

We had washi tape and gem stickers like these laid out all along a table, so the kids could decorate their baton. This took a lot longer than I thought; most of the kids were really into it, and the batons looked awesome afterwards!

#2: Baton lessons & dance.

My sister-in-law is a dancer, so she looked up some YouTube tutorials to learn how to do a few simple baton moves that she taught the kids. Then she put some of those moves together to the Kiya theme song and taught them a simple baton dance to the theme song!

#3: Our first mission!

Kiya loves going on missions, and so we needed to incorporate a couple missions into our party too!

Earlier in the day, my husband James had hidden allergy-safe candies in cardboard boxes around our neighborhood. Three different neighbors said we could hide one in their yard. Then he’d drawn maps and given clues for which house number to go to, when searching for each box of candy.

Example: One clue read “ten fingers and ten toes.” The kids figured out they had to look at house #20 on our street. Then there was a map of where in the yard to look for the box of candy. The kids didn’t use the maps though; they just used the clues and then searched the yards.

Allergy-Friendly Candies: My older daughter has a peanut, tree nut, dairy, and sesame allergy, and my younger daughter is allergic to eggs and sunflower seeds. So the candies we chose that were safe for both of them were Sour Patch Kids, Nerds’ Gummy Clusters, Big Chewy Nerds, Ring Pops, Trolli Sour Brite Crawlers, and Swedish Fish. (Of course double check the ingredients for yourself before purchasing!)

After the baton lessons, we put on our Kiya-inspired headbands like she wears in the shows! Each kid got to pick their own color.

Then we handed out little paper goodie bags labeled with each child’s name, since they’d each get to collect some of the candies on the treasure hunt!

And then, off we went! The whole group of us – adults and kids alike – running around the neighborhood getting candy like an early Halloween party! It was a HIT.

#4: Gem Hunt

The final mission was announced at the end of the Scavenger Hunt. My husband said, “While we were off solving the clues to find candy, GalactoSlug stole all our gems and hid them in our garden! We need to go dig them up and get them back!”

We handed out these colored shovels, which the kids got to keep after the party too. Then they got to work digging up these gemstones that James and my daughters had buried ahead of time.

#5: Allergy-Friendly Snacks and Cake

By this time, the kids were HUNGRY. So we brought out the snacks and beverages! Here’s what we had:

– Snyder’s Pretzels
– Trader Joe’s Plantain Chips
– Fresh strawberries
– Trader Joe’s Tortilla Chips (the white bag; some of their chips may contain sesame)
– Fun salsas from Trader Joe’s
– A bunch of cans of seltzer
– A big container of water
– Honest Kids Organic Berry Lemonade Juice Drink (juice boxes)
– Juicy Juice Fun Size Apple 100% Juice (juice boxes)

Once everyone had some food, we brought out the cake and sang happy birthday.

My daughters helped me make this allergy-friendly cake recipe (with this frosting recipe) ahead of time, and added food coloring to make it all different colors. They also put Trader Joe’s Scandinavian Swimmers on top to make it extra fancy.

Note: This is a different cake recipe than I usually use, and it was good, but chewier than a traditional birthday cake. Maybe we mixed the batter too much, when adding the food coloring. Here’s the recipe for the freaking FANTASTIC allergy-friendly chocolate cake I normally make for birthdays.

#6: Presents & Photos

As the kids played outside and inside the house, we pulled one child at a time into the dining room. My daughter opened that child’s gift, and then got a picture with them in a little photo section that we set up ahead of time, with this Kiya Happy Birthday Banner hanging above it. Then after the party, I sent each parent the picture of their child with my daughter.

And that’s what we did!

If you try it, I’d love to hear in the comments when you add to this party as well!

XOXO,
That Allergy Mama (Tiffany)
